So yesterday I went to go fight my this ticket I got... I was stopped at a 4-way intersection for making a 'rolling stop'. The cop asked for my license and driver's permit... I gave it to him and he looked at it... Meanwhile, I'm like pleading with the officer... asking him to let it go, because I"m poor as it is... and I cant' afford a ticket... He was like, "that's waht they all say"... so he then looks at my permit and sees that it wasn't currently validated... so he goes, wher'es the sticker? ... i'm like oh crap!... hoping that its in my glove compartment, i go to check... and thank god it was there... so i stick it on to the permit... and then he gives me a choice... he goes, "so i can either give u the ticket for a rolling stop, which comes with 2 demerit points, or i can give you the ticket for not validating u'r permit, which has no points"... surprisingly and naively, i'm like, "which one is better you think?" ... hahaha... anyways, he gave me the latter, failing to validate permit... so i had a $110 ticket on my hands which i decided to contest... so i called their office and booked an appointment with the prosecutor, called a 'first attendance meeting'

so that was yesterday... my first attendance meeting... there were about 15 other people there... people were called in alphabetical order... finally my name got called and i went into this small room where it was just the prosecutor and i... he's like, so u got charged for not validating u'r motor vehicle? ... and i'm like ... "yeah it was actually the permit which didn't have the sticker on it... the car had the sticker on it tho" ... and he's like ... "really?" ... and i'm like "yeah", showing him the permit and exactly which sticker i had left off... i basically brought in everything, u know, just in case i needed some sorta evidence or whatever... so he's like ... "actually, the ministry is supposed to stick it on to the permit, not you" ... was like ... and then 2 secs later ... .... and he goes, i'll withdraw the charges... and not a second after he said that i was like ... literally smiling from ear to ear ... it was a happy moment ... i saved myself $110 !!!! ...

anyways... that's my court story... a victorious moment in my life... now i gotta figure out what to do with the $110 i just saved :D

this past weekend i went paintballing in milton... there were about 50 other guys there... here are a few statistics to sum up the event:

number of hits on the mouth: 1
number of hits on the ear: 1
(the fact that i had face protection: priceless)
number of hits where the sun don't shine: 1
(the fact that i had protection there: even more priceless)
number of cuts due to hits: 1
number of hits on the rest of my body: 3
number of mosquito bites on my right hand alone: 26

but all in all, it was an awesome event... not as exhiliarating as playing halo, but still we had a great time... wish i had some pics to show but i didn't take any... ahh well... speaking of pics, i think i'm behind on my 'weekly pic' thing... i think i might just have to skip this week cuz i haven't taken any new pictures in a such a long time... and i've run out of ideas too... or maybe i just need to be a little more creative...

So as you may or may not know, I was on jury duty this week... one word to describe the whole experience: BORING... I thought it would be somewhat exciting, but no such luck.  And it really is a matter of luck because I think that people that actually get selected to sit on the jury have a much better time.  Here's how the whole thing played out:

So I get this letter in the mail about 2 or 3 months ago, saying that I have to report for jury duty.  Thinking it couldn't be all that bad, and I might even get something out of it, I signed the letter and sent in the form. Then a month ago, I received another letter saying that I needed to report to the courthouse downtown May 9th.  So by now i'm getting all excited, that i might get to sit on a jury.  What I realized tho was that I'd need to take time off work, either unpaid or use up my vacation!!!  I didn't like it, but i was pretty much stuck now.

So Monday came.  I reported at 8:30 downtown.  I was in a room full of people; about 300 to 400 that is.  If you've ever been to an airport and sat in one of the passenger lounges, you'd have somewhat an idea of what it was like. Except, think more people, less chairs, and less open space.  We were pretty much crammed in that room.  So there were 4 panels and I was on panel 89.  We waited about an hour when we recieved the announcement that the judge was ready for some jurors. We went into the court room, single file and were escorted to our seats.  Sitting down and looking around the court room, it all felt a bit quaintly familiar.  It was as if I'd been there before, but I didnt' really recognize anything.  Maybe from watching the OJ Simpson trial or something.

So we sat there, and then finally the judge appears.  We all get up and then sit right back down after the judge sits down.  The judge explains to us how they are going to pick out the jurors and what the case is about.  I'd probably be better off not telling you what the case is about on my blog.  Eventually, my name gets picked out of a box and I have to go before the judge to answer questions!

I step up on to the witness box and the judges asks me if I'd like to be sworn or affirmed.  I see the qur'an on the table so i'm like ... the qur'an please? ... haha, not sure if islamically that was the right thing to do or not.  So the prosecutor asks me a few questions and i answer them.  Not sure why, but i had this big smile on my face the whole time.  So right before it finishes, I tell the judge that I can't really take time off work.  Especially since the trial was expected to last 2 weeks.  I was like, "my company only has 5 developers, and if i leave, that's a 20% reduction in workforce, and hence a 20% reduction in productivity"... it was all scripted and thought up of before i went in :P... so he asks the crown and defense if its ok, and they agreed to let me off.  woohoo! ... or so i thought.

So here i am, at the back of the court, thinking its all over.  I get to leave now.  Little did i know that I was expected to stick around for the whole freakin week!  Because it was only the that trial that i was excused from, not from the jury panel :(... i went to the jury administration to plead my case.  They didn't buy anything i had to say.  I even had a letter on the second day from my employer saying that they couldn't afford to lose me for a whole week.  hahaha.  still didn't work. 

So the second day went by, we didn't do anything but sit in a waiting room the whole day! I learned how to play euchre with three old ladies.  They were really nice, and it was better then sitting around doing nothing.  I brought my laptop and played some games on it, but there's only so much time u can spend on a comptuer before u need some human interaction, at least for me.  They let us off an hour early and told us to come back the next morning.  Before i left tho one of the ladies told me to come see her at the end of the day on wednesday. 

Come wednesday, again, nothing to do but sit in a waiting room.  I started watching this movie on my laptop called 'Napolean Dynamite' on recommendation from a friend. It was funny, but i still have to finish it because they let us off at 12:30!!!  and that meant they would let me off for the rest of the week.  wooohooo!  And that ends my jury story.  Wow, what a long story. 

I surprised myself by going back to work wednesday after lunch, right after i got out.  I think it was probably because i had been so bored the last 2 and half days that i need somethign to do and was afraid that i'd be bored if i went home ... But yeah, no more jury duty for at least 5 years i hope.  Or EVER!...

A word of advice, if u ever get a summons to juror in the mail, dont' wait till u get to the courthouse to explain that you can't make it for jury duty.  Send them a letter, call them, but whatever you do, don't go there in person!  Because they won't let you off then.  Tell them before hand... the chances are better you'll get off then ...
